User interface translation

There's one thing that is quite necessary for better functioning of the Shona Wikipedia: translating the user interface. Currently, most of the interface appears in English, and even common buttons like "Edit", "Cancel", and "View history" are not translated into Shona.

Letter L

Hello Masiziva. I hope you are well. What are your thoughts on including the letter L in Shona orthography especially for words borrowed from other langauges? I think most Shona speakers today when speaking their vernacular mixed with borrrowed words will stay with the L and do not change it to an R. For example cellphone, local, elastic retain their Ls. Hello Holani, I am well thank you, I extend my regards to you as well. To address your enquiry, yes I found this to be the case as well people often retain the L in borrowed words and even add L to some words that originally did not have L when speaking in slang, such as gulezi for maiguru.

I do believe that the letter L has a place in the Shona Orthography as it already exists within other "languages" and/or dialects depending on your preferred terminology for the existing variations of Shona. From personal research and studies of historical usage, I found Karanga, Ndau and Korekore seem to use the letter L, although I found it is used in the form of digraphs such as Dhl-, Tl-, Hl- or Ndhl- etcetera. Additionally, I noted that whilst the letter is used in digraphs, in Ndau particularly words of Nguni origin are often written with the letter Y instead of L, example Mlambo is Muyambo and idolo is dhoyo, yet again hlola is hloya. Whilst in Karanga Thy-, Dhy-, and Ndy- are used regardless of the spoken pronunciation, examples being kuthyisa pronounced as kutlisa, kudhya pronounced as kudhla etcetera.

To touch on how the L fits into the Shona orthography exactly, I think in terms of independent use, in my understand and in listening to speakers the letter L and R in Shona are indeed interchangeable although the L is not quite like that of English, Zulu or Swahili, but similar to that of Venda or Tswana, where it is somewhere between an L and R, comparable even to Japanese or Korean, this may be why when the Shona language was first standardized R was used and L was not considered because the letters L and R sounded similar. I believe Kinyarwanda and Kirundi have a similar dilemma whereby the two letters are mostly interchangeable, and R is also predominently used and L is used for borrowed words. Similar to these languages, in Shona either the R is well pronounced or it is soft and closer to Da and Ra combined in Shona, this is difficult to translate with the Latin alphabet without revising the existing Shona alphabet, I sometimes translate these differing pronunciations as R and Ř.

From this perspective, Shona requires two Rs and one L, the well pronounced R, the soft Ř and an L for borrowed words of English and other languages, however, a system is required in order for our language to preserve itself otherwise it will become something of a creole. I personally follow the rule that if words being borrowed cannot be translated using R without impeding on existing Shona words or other borrowed words I will keep the L, so as to not confuse people or have an influx of words spelt, spoken and written the same. Otherwise most words I personally translate with R although this may be due to my understanding of the two existing Rs in Shona.

I propose a revision of the current Shona alphabet and possibly even the formation of a Script specific to our language - if such a project is to be started please do reach out as I already have a few script designs kkkkk.
