Marshal Rosenberg born October 6th 1934,was an American Psychologist, mediator, author and teacher. Born in Ohio, Rosenberg was influenced by his early experiences with violence and discrimination in Detroit. He earned a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1961, studying under psychologist Carl Rogers. Unsatisfied with his clinical work, Rosenberg focused on creating a "different psychology" to promote social change. He developed Nonviolent Communication, a process for resolving conflicts and fostering compassionate connection by focusing on universal human needs. He taught this process globally for over 40 years. In his 80 years of life, he took time to share through his work on non violent communication with the world.He founded the CNVC in the 1980s to support his peacemaking efforts. The organization offers workshops and training in NVC around the Rosenberg applied his NVC principles in many volatile situations, including in areas with conflict and war, and worked with various groups, including educators, police, and government officials. Rosenberg authored several books, including Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. After his death in 2015, organizations like the NVC Academy were established to continue his work.The four components which NVC is structured around four components namely, Observations- Stating the concrete actions that are affecting you, without evaluation or judgment, Feelings- Expressing the emotion, such as hurt or happiness, that comes from the observation. Needs-Stating the universal human needs, like safety, connection, or understanding, that are connected to the feeling. Requests: Making a concrete, clear, and positive request for action from the other person.The giraffe and the jackal- To illustrate different communication styles, Rosenberg famously used animal metaphors in his workshops. The gentle, big-hearted giraffe represents NVC, while the aggressive jackal represents violent or judgmental communication.
