English: The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. Although originally named as a dyke (The Great Dyke of Rhodesia) when first studied by geologists in the 19th century, it is now known to be a layered lopolith, not a dyke. The southern end of the dyke is captured in this photograph taken by astronauts. Two large burn scars from fires are visible at image top centre. North is to the right. |
